Allegro comodo. Brahms: Cello Sonata No. Allegro non troppo. Allegretto quasi menuetto. Adagio affettuoso. Allegro passionato. Allegro molto. She also reminds us that, with enough preparation, a fine artist can make the most challenging material come across with the ease of natural breathing.
Despite the fact that the cello is a solo instrument, only five of the 36 total movements in the six suites are based on a simple melodic line. All the others assume the player can manage to play in harmony and counterpoint with her or himself.
The music can be played in strict, Modern time, or it can be given a sort of flexible inner rhythm like that of walking or breathing. The distance between these two poles is nearly infinite, with the most widely loved interpretations being the fairly strict takes offered by great cellists such as Yo Yo Ma and, today, Jean-Guihen Queyras on modern instruments.
Is one better or worse than the other? Mercer achieves this same effortless quality. Bach set the narrative in each six-movement suite like the ideal story, interweaving tighter, faster sections with slower, more reflective music. Mercer colors in the textures, while subtly reminding us of the thematic threads that link each movement. Here is one more album with a compelling argument that the stern-faced Bach was as human as the rest of us — just a lot more clever.
Rachel Mercer. The fifth suite's Prelude replaces the toccata-like movements of the rest of the set with an overture in the French style, beginning with a slow, moody Adagio introduction with dense chords and irregular rhythms. These lead into an Allegro section where a fugue-like counterpoint is implied but not explicitly played. The Allemande and Courante have a mournfulness reminiscent of their counterparts in the second suite, but feature richer, denser chording.
But as much as Bach explores the contrapuntal possibilities of the cello here, his truly sublime achievement is the Sarabande. It offers some notes of one-voice, single-line playing, with no chords and an unchanging rhythmic pattern. And yet its mix of great leaps and leading tones convey a lifetime of sorrow and wisdom. The harmonic structure is haunting, providing one point of tension after another with little resolution until the very end. The Gavotte galanterie is chordal and anguished again despite its name, but the final Gigue closes on a much more ambiguous, hushed note than does its D minor relative.
