The J Files. Thu 13 Aug Thu 6 Aug Thu 9 Jul Under the guise of his longstanding indie-folk project Fruit Bats, Eric D. But halfway through, I realised I had to honour the original album while creating something of my own. Then I agonised over making it as good as anything of my own.
People would never think that I like Smashing Pumpkins — even though I love them! It was a record I had a remove from and yet also has a deep personal connection from my youth.
It was my first idea, but at the last minute I tried to back out and had to be reassured, because it felt untouchable. I keep describing it as my dream version, and I tried to recreate it from memory as much as possible.
Of course, I went back and listened to the original to learn lyrics, but I wanted to follow any direction my mind took it in. Billy writes songs, Ricky is an artist, and Jesse, it turns out, loves acting.
He joined the acting troupe at the Western DuPage Special Recreation Association, and then began to write his own plays. He wrote in study hall, at home, anywhere. When a thought hit Jesse, he'd write it on a scrap of paper. Pretty soon, scraps of paper were all over the house. Jesse says he'd shut himself in his room, writing three scenes in one sitting.
Describing the plots, Jesse quickly becomes absorbed. In the "Haunted Sleep Over", a group of teen-agers spend a night in a haunted mansion. In his second play, "Phantom of the Hoosiers," set at Indiana University, one character is disfigured, similar to the character in "Phantom of the Opera.
In the audience, not only were there childhood neighbors from Glendale Heights, but also his brother Billy. I take a lot of inspiration from that. He faces the audience, speaks clearly, remembers his lines and coaches others. Jesse likes going to the Pumpkins' concerts and staying in the VIP section, or the "safety zone," as he calls it. Billy's married and Jesse has his own life. Their conversations are more of the man-to-man variety. Jesse needs a friend more than a father figure.
I felt a bit rejected. But it's hard. No Replies Log in to reply. There was an error. Love is suicide General Comment erm, isn't the term "retarded" a bit harsh? People have started to use it as an insult which is completely stupid , but that in no way changes the fact that it's still a legitimate medical term used to describe people with disabilities.
Literally, it means "slow;" you could be mentally or physically retarded, whatever it is, it basically just means you're slow to do things in that sense or are disabled. Flag tigers on January 11, General Comment For those who said this song was about and for Billy's brother is correct. Now, in response to what y2doggy asks about the line "we won't belong," I remember reading somewhere that as children and as adolescents, Billy considered both himself and his brother as outcasts.
Billy didn't belong because he was emotionally different from other children i. That's exactly what I was thinking when I heard those lines. This song makes me tear up. Flag feminist92 on October 01, General Comment Got this from blamo. Billy wrote this for his little disabled brother, Jesse. It's a very quiet song also. The band, however, would not let the company cut corners if it meant compromising the sound. The album boasts relatively high production values and ornate arrangements compared to other earlys alternative albums.
Vig said, "Billy wanted to make a record that people would put on and say, 'What the fuck was that? Corgan has stated that " Soma " alone contains up to 40 overdubbed guitar parts.
The subjects of Corgan's lyrics on Siamese Dream varied. Corgan noted that most of his lyrics for the album were about his girlfriend and future ex-wife Chris Fabian, with whom he had briefly broken up at the time he wrote the songs. In "Cherub Rock", the album's opening track, Corgan attacked the American music industry , and "Today" is about a day that he was experiencing depression and suicidal thoughts.
The artwork for the album was initially going to be created by an outsider artist , but after a series of disagreements with the label, Corgan was forced to step in at the last minute.
In , Virgin Records reissued the album with the original page booklet. Shortly after the Pumpkins reformed in , Corgan posted a message to the band's blog saying that they were "[l]ooking for girls from Siamese Dream album cover As you all know, they were quite young when the photo was taken. They are not conjoined anymore, as far as we know.
According to Corgan, "Just found out the weirdest news: our bass player Nicole just admitted she is one of the girls on the cover of Siamese Dream. Given Fiorentino's age at the time of the album, this would make her too old to be on the cover of the album.
Pictures exist of Billy standing with Ali Laenger, the girl on the right side of the photograph, but it is unknown if the girl on the left, identified as LySandra Roberts, met Billy like Laenger did. The album was also released as a shaped wooden box set aka Siamese Dream Collectors Edition with metal hinges, limited to only 1, copies and containing the UK HUT CD album housed in a recess with individually numbered silver metal embossed plate at the side and a page booklet housed in a similar recess in the lid.
Siamese Dream was released on July 27, and debuted at number ten on the Billboard the following week. Select ' s Andrew Perry praised it as "the most grand-scale, expansively-passionate blasts of music you'll hear this year" and remarked that it would be "hard for anyone to top this one". Entertainment Weekly critic David Browne praised the band for living up to industry expectations of being the "next Nirvana" and compared Siamese Dream favorably to Nirvana's Nevermind , concluding: "In aiming for more than just another alternative guitar record, Smashing Pumpkins may have stumbled upon a whole new stance: slackers with a vision.
Siamese Dream continues to receive critical praise and has been frequently included in lists of the best albums of the s—the Alternative Press ranked it fourth, Pitchfork ranked it 18th, and Spin ranked it 23rd.

Corgan would sing about his depression throughout the album and "Disarm" would be the clearest example of this.
