One of the things that I've found that I love about Miriam Makeba's music is how bright and truly happy it sounds, and how easily it transports me to another place. On this recording, thankfully her beautiful and magical voice is not buried under the instruments or backup singers performing with her. The joyful sound of her music is presented clearly and cleanly here, and brings me so much joy while I'm listening to it.
The collection of songs on this CD set is also some of Ms. Makeba's best, and is a great place to start if you don't have any of her music in your collection yet. I've bought three Miriam Makeba CDs, including this one, since first seeing that Honda ad that plays her "Pata Pata", and I was compelled to find an album that contained the version played in the ad. Now that I've got it on this CD set, I can relax, and truly enjoy the music of one of the world's great International artists.
If her music doesn't bring you joy and brighten your day, I'll be very surprised! In a class all alone, tha'st where Miriam Makeba belongs her music takes you back to South Africa and makes you feel like you are a part of the struggle. Her style is unmatched and her authentic and traditional "cluck cluck" sound is on this CD.. She sings and her music rips your heart and soul.
She is one true African singer with the gift or relaying the stories, culture and sounds of Africa through her music. She is an evergreen! I love this CD. I put it in the CD mixer for parties and everyone asks who it is when it comes on. Also, I got a bunch of lazy 30 year old chicks to actually get up and dance to Pata Pata at a Bunko party.
And my nieces like to dance to it too! Her voice makes me want to know her. Purchased as a gift for a friend who fell in love with African music after seeing the Lion King.
She absolutely loved it and keeps it in her car as she drives to and from her errands. Not only does she love it for the fine music it produces, but says it helps soothe her as she navigates through busy traffic and keeps her calm. African Music. Monahan's Song of the Week. Africa: Eine Musikalische Reise. Again, chronological sequencing would have really helped, but taken all together, you do get a sense of the considerable ground she covered in the s and s, from somewhat dated but charmingly hokey jazz-pop backings to earthy rhythmic recordings that drew considerably more from indigenous South African styles.
