McCunn was the son of a wealthy Greenock shipbuilder, and a musical prodigy. He wrote this evocative overture at the age of 18, and it was premiered at the Crystal Palace when he was 19 in In , the year old was already a music professor in London, while the year-old Edward Elgar had only just had his first success with Salut d'Amour, and was still some years off writing his first orchestral score.
McCunn's later works never caught on to the same extent, and his Highland Memories included here are hardly well known. It is a great pity that ASV went out of business soon after this recording was made, and that copies are thus scarce and command high prices. Notwithstanding John Wilson's current standing, it is hardly worth paying the extortionate prices currently demanded for even used copies. Martyn Brabbins on Hyperion is perhaps a surer recommendation: unless one wants the other works here - including those by Iain Hamilton, Cedric Thorpe Davie, Marcus Dods, Buxton Orr and Muir Mathieson - some of which are otherwise unavailable.
Perhaps some enterprising concern will acquire the rights to this attractive disc and make it available again at a reasonable price. I bought this CD as a present for my elderly mother. It has given her tremendous pleasure. Although it was secondhand, it was in excellent order and it arrived in good time. See all reviews from the United Kingdom. Top international reviews.

Buxton Orr takes a much more serious view of the Celtic element with a Fanfare and Processional curiously described as a 'piece of brass writing for strings', and Maurice Handford - Hallé Encore!
