Palmer's very presence signals the one major flaw with the album — in an attempt to appeal to a wide audience, Becker and Fagen tempered their wildest impulses with mainstream pop techniques. They think it's very good, the company thinks it's very good, and so far, a lot of radio stations have agreed by playing cuts from the album.
They don't dress trendy, they aren't particularly pretty, they just play and write fine music. They are currently on a concert tour, catch them if you can and make up your own mind. A lot of superlatives from us isn't going to convince you. Their music will.

If you can get beyond the constant crackle of the surface noise, this is a wonderful album. So many of the reissue albums that have come out recently just haven't got that good sound quality that make you want to listen with enjoyment. I have nothing but high praise for this remaster. I never had this album "back in the day" when it was out new, even though I was a big Dan fan.

Consequently, there are very few of the jazz flourishes that came to distinguish their albums -- the breakthrough single, "Do It Again," does work an impressively tight Latin jazz beat, and "Reelin' in the Years" has jazzy guitar solos and harmonies -- and the production is overly polished, conforming to all the conventions of early-'70s radio.
