I also love their peculiar and bizarre weakness to certain blood types. They remain mostly inscrutable without but due to their bond with one of the heroines, we finally get some insight into their motives. The characterization of the protagonists is really where the books shine as they avoid the trap of characters getting too used to their circumstances.
Everyone is traumatized by the horror around them, miserable, and on the verge of panic with even the best barely keeping it together.
I also like how it's made clear all of these people had fairly happy lives before the events changed them irrevocably. The horror of the red light aliens and their actions as well as their hostility only grows throughout the book, keeping them a threat right to the end. Do I have any criticism? I think the ending might have been a little too pat after such a horrible long ordeal. Then again, if the author ever wants to do a sequel trilogy or follow up the characters then leaving some parts of the Earth intact is a good idea.
Besides, if anyone deserves a bit of respite it's this group as the author has truly put them through hell. In conclusion, I recommend this horror novel to fans of the zombie genre who'd like something a little different. I also think fans of Stephen King will appreciate Jason Bovberg's style of focusing on the mundane before transitioning to the nightmarish.

Bovberg throws me yet another curve ball. Blood Dawn is my favorite book of the 3 due to the nearly nonstop action and the vividly gruesome detail in which the last installment is described. Easily the best book in the Blood series. Bovberg's writing is much smoother, making the story more engaging and the characters easier to relate to. It's a quick read with tension that mounts steadily until the end, which is exciting and pretty gruesome and those creatures are just as frickin' creepy as they were in previous novels.
If you've read the other novels in the series, you can expect a satisfying ending with Blood Dawn. Sierra Londenberg rated it it was amazing Jun 06, Apr 06, Barb rated it it was amazing.

At the magic shop, Dawn feels awkward because of the way everyone is treating her and notices when Giles hides a book in a hidden counter drawer. Buffy opens presents from her friends and everyone gets quiet when she receives a framed picture of herself and Dawn from a vacation which is, like most of Dawn's life, a false memory from her sister.
Dawn finally gets upset and confronts everyone about their strange behavior around her, then storms to her room. After sneaking out of the house, Dawn runs into Spike , who was keeping his nightly watch outside Buffy's house. After a brief conversation, Dawn tells Spike that she is on her way to the Magic Shop to steal a book.
Spike notes the myriad dangers of roaming around alone at night, and then he accepts Dawn's offer to let him tag along.
With Spike's assistance, Dawn breaks into the shop and finds the Book that she had seen Giles hide earlier. By candlelight, Dawn and Spike read about the truth of Dawn and the Key. Oddly, Spike treats this revelation with total equanimity; Dawn's reaction, of course, is far more vivid. Dawn returns to the house in a state of shock, bleeding from a self-inflicted knife wound, tearfully questioning what she is. Joyce and Buffy try to talk to her, but Dawn, scared and experiencing an existential crisis, demands that they leave her alone.
Buffy confronts Spike for letting Dawn find out the truth the way she did. He turns the tables on her and says that she should have told Dawn the truth in the first place. He also notes that Dawn was going with or without him, and that he only went along to protect her from harm, thinking that she would be safer with "Big Bad" looking over her shoulder. Comrade Three was in charge of logistics. A perfect, sacred number. A closed Circle.
The Standing Committee. Organized secrecy at the epicenter. The revolution could take no longer; sitting and waiting on reactions is what the State wants. To substitute one class for another, one number for another.
He said that in some rural communities, people had reacted negatively to the revolutionary doctrine. Some found it difficult to accept the revolution, but we trusted that they would absorb and grow to understand the guiding thought. There were clashes and some comrades fell, which emboldened police in zones paramount to our advancement.

Then, as if suddenly uncomfortable, she gave it back to Comrade Felipe. The Leader prepared to speak to the assembled commissars to open the meeting. Comrades, it must be made clear from the first: the party rules over the barrel of the gun and we will never let it be the other way around.
That said, the masses need to be educated on the crucible of Marxist-Leninist-Maoist thought, and the revolutionary army must mobilize the masses. Forceful measures are needed to take the qualitative leap of decisive importance for the party and for the revolution. Not one murmur. Venerable silence in response to his words.
Comrade Two maintained an unreadable look. Her posture was always erect, vertical, in line with the wall, where there was an image of Mao guiding his people beneath the red sun in perpetual advancement and transformation. A new dawn unfolding. Comrade Leader continued outlining the ideological plan. Comrade Felipe would be in charge of the tactical details this time, of overseeing how the action should proceed.
